Q. How far in advance should class reservations be made?
A. Classes should be reserved at least 2 weeks prior, this will allow plenty of time for homework and study time.
Q. What if I have to cancel my reservation?
A. Outside 30 days, a $100 re-scheduling fee will apply to confirm a new class date. Inside 30 days, 50% of class fee will apply to confirm a new class date. Inside seven (7) days, the full cost of the class will be incurred.
Q. What should I bring to class?
A. Students should bring homework, class textbook and ASA logbook to class. Hat, sunscreen and sunglasses are recommended and bottled water for the boat to stay hydrated. Sailing gloves and hats are for sale in the Harbor Sailboats office. All boats are equipped with a life jacket for each student.
Q. Where do I park?
A. There is a large parking lot located directly in front of our office. No permits or fees are required (A parking pass is required if you are staying overnight on a boat, please check at the front desk for a special pass.)
Q. How many students are in each class?
A. We schedule a maximum of four students with one instructor for each class. Liveaboard classes are based on double occupancy. Private classes can be arranged for an additional fee, please contact our office for more information and pricing.
Q. We'd prefer a female instructor, is this possible?
A. We try to accommodate all requests and have several excellent female instructors. If available on the date(s) you choose to take class, we will attempt to schedule accordingly.
Q. What should I expect as far as wind, sea and other local weather conditions?
A. We're located on the San Diego Bay in Southern California. Wind speeds typically range from 10-15 knots March through October. During the summer months we can get coastal fog in the mornings, which typically burns off by 10-11am. The winds pick up in the late morning/early afternoon. During the winter months (November - February), winds are generally lighter, except during seasonal storms. Because we are located directly on the Pacific, you can get a taste of ocean sailing.
The opportunity and exposure to the challenges of learning to sail on the open ocean, distinguishes Harbor Sailboats from other sailing schools. We teach our students how to prepare themselves and their boat for safe open ocean sailing. Additionally, in our sailing waters there are many protected areas, which allow for sailing in calmer winds and seas. |
