The fun is back in sailing with the addition of the Flying Tiger 7.5M to the Harbor Sailboats charter fleet. Designed as a fast, dry and affordable sport boat, the 7.5 has exceeded our expectations. The first boat will be fully commissioned in April and is available for day sail
and racing charters.
At 25 feet in length and weighing in at 2,150 pounds the 7.5 is stiff and forgiving with a 6-foot draft and 1,190 pounds of ballast on a torpedo bulb. The sails are Aramid fiber by Neil Pryde and the rig is quite simple with a small jib and fathead mainsail that powers up nicely in light air and is easily de-powered in a breeze. An outboard engine is installed to bring you home if the wind quits. Easily sailed with a minimum of (2) or loaded up with a maximum (6), the 13-foot cockpit is a joy to move about with enough room for hardcore racers or kick back cruisers.
In order to day sail the 7.5, members must be ASA 103 certified and complete a 2-hour qualifying clinic. Group and private clinics will be offered on a regular basis, please contact office for schedule. For members wanting to step up and race, a 4-hour qualifying clinic is required to become "spinnaker certified". Three (3) spinnaker certified crew must be aboard the boat to race or day sail with the 800 square foot spinnaker. Competitive events for club members will include the Cortez Racing Association Sport Boat Class, Summer Beer Can Series and Harbor Sailboats will sponsor an Annual Fleet Championship Series for members.
For more serious racers, the option of purchase and charter placement of their own 7.5 offers many benefits. Offsetting income and tax savings are available to most owners who charter their yachts while providing ample personal use. 7.5 owners in the San Diego Fleet
will have their own One Design Race Series hosted by the Coronado Yacht Club in south
San Diego Bay.
